The Ministry of Education (MoE) is the government institution responsible for planning, developing, and overseeing Jordan’s public education system from kindergarten through secondary education. Established in 1921, the Ministry formulates and implements national education policies aimed at providing quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all students while preparing future generations with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute to Jordan’s sustainable development. Headquartered in Amman, with directorates across all governorates, the Ministry supervises thousands of public schools, educational institutions, teachers, administrators, and students throughout the Kingdom. It works closely with the private education sector, international organizations, and local communities to continuously improve educational quality and outcomes.
The Ministry oversees a comprehensive range of responsibilities, including curriculum development, teacher recruitment and professional training, school construction and maintenance, educational supervision, examinations and student assessment, educational technology, vocational education, special education, early childhood education, school health, extracurricular activities, and educational planning. It also administers the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi), develops national curricula and textbooks, promotes digital learning, and implements educational reforms that align with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision and international education standards. Through its digital transformation initiatives, the Ministry has expanded electronic learning platforms, online registration systems, digital student records, teacher services, and numerous e-government education services.
The Ministry is headed by H.E. Dr. Azmi Mahafzah, who serves as the Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Dr. Mahafzah is an accomplished academic and former university president with extensive experience in educational leadership, public policy, and higher education administration. Under his leadership, the Ministry continues to focus on improving educational quality, strengthening teacher development, modernizing curricula, expanding digital education, enhancing school infrastructure, and preparing students with the skills required for the future labor market. The Ministry works closely with national institutions, universities, UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and other international partners to advance educational excellence and innovation.
Today, the Ministry of Education plays a fundamental role in Jordan’s social and economic development by providing quality education, promoting lifelong learning, fostering innovation and critical thinking, and preparing future generations to meet the challenges of an evolving global economy. Through continuous educational reform, digital transformation, and investment in human capital, the Ministry contributes significantly to national development, social inclusion, economic competitiveness, and the long-term prosperity of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
