Description:

The Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places is the government institution responsible for overseeing Islamic endowments (Awqaf), religious affairs, mosques, Hajj and Umrah services, Islamic education, and the administration of Jordan’s Islamic holy sites. Established in 1921, the Ministry plays a vital role in preserving Jordan’s Islamic heritage, promoting moderate Islamic values, supporting religious guidance, and safeguarding the Kingdom’s historic and religious endowments. Headquartered in Amman, with directorates and Awqaf offices throughout all governorates, the Ministry serves worshippers, pilgrims, religious institutions, charitable organizations, and the wider community by providing religious, educational, and administrative services. It also holds a significant role in supporting the Hashemite Custodianship of the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, particularly Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

The Ministry is responsible for managing and maintaining mosques, supervising imams and religious preachers, administering Awqaf properties and investments, organizing Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, promoting Islamic awareness, preserving Islamic manuscripts and heritage, overseeing Quran memorization centers, supporting charitable endowments, and maintaining Jordan’s Islamic shrines and holy places. Through its affiliated institutions and specialized departments, the Ministry also supervises the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem, manages restoration projects at Al-Aqsa Mosque, and contributes to the preservation of Islamic and historical sites. In addition, it has expanded its digital services to facilitate Hajj and Umrah registration, religious services, charitable donations, and public access to ministry programs.

The Ministry is headed by H.E. Dr. Mohammad Al-Khalayla, who serves as the Minister of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places. The Minister oversees the Ministry’s religious, administrative, and strategic responsibilities, including Awqaf management, Hajj and Umrah affairs, mosque administration, Islamic education, and the preservation of Jordan’s Islamic holy sites. Working closely with the Royal Hashemite Court, the General Iftaa’ Department, the Department of the Chief Justice, and regional and international Islamic organizations, the Ministry continues to promote moderation, religious dialogue, social solidarity, and the preservation of Islamic heritage.

Today, the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places plays a fundamental role in strengthening Jordan’s religious, cultural, and social fabric. Through the administration of Awqaf, the preservation of Islamic holy sites, the organization of Hajj and Umrah services, and the promotion of authentic Islamic values, the Ministry contributes significantly to national identity, community development, religious education, and the continued protection of one of the world’s most important Islamic heritage sites.
