Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA)

The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) is the national authority responsible for regulating, monitoring, and ensuring the safety, quality, and effectiveness of food, medicines, medical devices, cosmetics, dietary supplements, pesticides, and other health-related products in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Established in 2003 under the Jordan Food and Drug Administration Law No. (41) of 2003, the JFDA operates as an independent government institution and serves as the country’s primary regulatory body for public health protection. Through its headquarters in Amman, regional directorates, laboratories, and inspection teams, the Administration works to safeguard consumers while supporting the development of Jordan’s pharmaceutical, healthcare, and food industries.

The JFDA is responsible for registering and licensing medicines, vaccines, medical devices, food products, cosmetics, and health products before they enter the Jordanian market. Its responsibilities also include inspecting pharmaceutical manufacturers, food factories, warehouses, pharmacies, hospitals, laboratories, restaurants, and food establishments; monitoring product quality and safety; conducting laboratory testing and scientific evaluations; issuing import and export permits; overseeing clinical trials; monitoring adverse drug reactions; enforcing food and drug legislation; combating counterfeit and illegal products; and implementing national food safety and pharmaceutical policies. The Administration works closely with healthcare professionals, manufacturers, importers, exporters, and international regulatory organizations to ensure compliance with national and international standards.

As part of Jordan’s digital transformation strategy, the JFDA has introduced a wide range of electronic services, including online product registration, licensing applications, import and export permits, pharmaceutical and food product tracking, electronic certification, laboratory service requests, inspection management systems, and digital regulatory platforms. These services have streamlined regulatory procedures, improved transparency, accelerated approvals, and strengthened oversight while supporting Jordan’s growing pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors.

The Administration is headed by the Director General, who oversees regulatory affairs, food safety, pharmaceutical regulation, laboratory services, inspection and enforcement, strategic planning, and institutional development. Working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), international regulatory authorities, research institutions, and regional partners, the JFDA continuously enhances its scientific capabilities, regulatory framework, laboratory infrastructure, and digital services in accordance with international best practices.

Today, the Jordan Food and Drug Administration plays a vital role in protecting public health by ensuring that food, medicines, and healthcare products available in Jordan meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and effectiveness. Through rigorous regulation, scientific evaluation, continuous market surveillance, and international cooperation, the JFDA contributes to consumer protection, healthcare quality, pharmaceutical innovation, food security, and sustainable economic development, making it one of Jordan’s most important public health institutions.
