The Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD) is one of Jordan’s principal government institutions operating under the Ministry of Finance. The Department is responsible for administering and enforcing the Kingdom’s Income Tax Law and General Sales Tax Law, ensuring fair tax collection while supporting economic growth and public finance. Through its headquarters in Amman and a network of directorates and service centers across Jordan, the Department serves individuals, businesses, investors, tax professionals, and government entities by providing efficient tax administration, electronic services, taxpayer support, and regulatory oversight. Its mission is to promote voluntary tax compliance, strengthen transparency, and contribute to the sustainable financing of public services and national development.
The Department’s responsibilities include registering taxpayers, issuing Tax Identification Numbers (TINs), receiving and auditing tax returns, assessing and collecting income and sales taxes, conducting tax inspections and investigations, processing refunds, resolving tax disputes, combating tax evasion, and ensuring compliance with Jordanian tax legislation. It also provides tax education, publishes guides and regulations, and works closely with other government agencies to improve financial governance and facilitate business operations.
As part of Jordan’s digital transformation strategy, the Income and Sales Tax Department has introduced a wide range of electronic services, allowing taxpayers to register online, submit tax returns, pay taxes electronically, request tax clearance certificates, update taxpayer information, monitor tax accounts, and access numerous services through Jordan’s e-government platforms. These digital initiatives have significantly improved service efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for both individuals and businesses.
The Department is led by the Director General, who oversees the implementation of national tax policies, the modernization of tax administration, and the development of taxpayer services. Working in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance and other government institutions, the Department continuously enhances its regulatory framework, digital infrastructure, and compliance systems to create a fair, transparent, and efficient tax environment.
Today, the Income and Sales Tax Department plays a vital role in Jordan’s economy by securing government revenues that fund essential public services, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and national development projects. Through effective tax administration, taxpayer support, and ongoing digital innovation, the Department contributes to strengthening Jordan’s fiscal sustainability, improving the investment climate, and promoting confidence in the Kingdom’s financial system.
