The Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) is one of Jordan’s most important government institutions under the Ministry of Interior, responsible for maintaining the Kingdom’s official civil registry and issuing identity and travel documents for Jordanian citizens. The Department manages the registration of births, deaths, marriages, divorces, family records, changes to personal information, national identity cards, passports, and other official civil documents. Through its network of directorates and service offices across all governorates, the Department ensures the accuracy, security, and integrity of Jordan’s national population database while supporting digital government services and secure identity management.
The Department traces its origins to 1921, when the first passport office was established in the Emirate of Transjordan. The Civil Status Department became an independent government body in 1966, and in 1988 it was merged with the General Passports Department to form the current Civil Status and Passports Department. Since then, it has evolved into one of Jordan’s most advanced public service institutions, introducing smart ID cards, electronic passport renewal, online civil registration services, digital archiving, and a nationwide network of more than 90 service offices to provide convenient access for citizens throughout the Kingdom.
Today, the Civil Status and Passports Department provides a wide range of services, including the issuance and renewal of passports, national ID cards, family books, birth, marriage and death certificates, document legalization, address registration, and various electronic services available through Jordan’s e-government platform. The Department plays a vital role in protecting citizens’ legal identity, supporting government agencies with reliable population records, and facilitating secure travel and public services both inside Jordan and abroad.
