The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) is the national authority responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing standards, technical regulations, metrology, conformity assessment, and quality infrastructure in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Established in 1994 under the Standards and Metrology Law No. (22) of 1994, JSMO operates as an independent government institution dedicated to protecting consumers, supporting industry, facilitating trade, and enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian products in local and international markets. Through its headquarters in Amman and specialized laboratories, inspection units, and certification services, the Organization serves manufacturers, importers, exporters, businesses, government agencies, testing laboratories, and consumers across the Kingdom.
JSMO is responsible for developing and adopting Jordanian Standards, issuing and enforcing technical regulations, ensuring measurement accuracy through the national metrology system, accrediting and supervising conformity assessment activities, and monitoring the quality and safety of products available in the Jordanian market. Its responsibilities also include product testing and certification, calibration services, legal metrology, fuel quality monitoring, precious metals hallmarking, pre-packaged goods inspection, market surveillance, consumer protection, and ensuring compliance with national and international quality standards. The Organization works closely with manufacturers and importers to verify that products meet Jordanian safety, health, environmental, and performance requirements before entering the market.
As part of Jordan’s digital transformation strategy, JSMO has introduced a comprehensive range of electronic services, including online applications for standards, product certification, calibration services, laboratory testing, import approvals, conformity certificates, precious metals services, and technical information. These digital initiatives have streamlined regulatory procedures, improved transparency, accelerated service delivery, and strengthened Jordan’s quality infrastructure while facilitating domestic and international trade.
The Organization is headed by the Director General, who oversees standards development, technical regulations, metrology, conformity assessment, laboratory operations, inspection activities, and institutional development. JSMO works in close cooperation with government institutions, the private sector, universities, and international organizations, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), and regional standards organizations. Through these partnerships, the Organization continuously updates Jordan’s standards and technical regulations in line with international best practices and technological advancements.
Today, the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization plays a fundamental role in protecting public health and safety, promoting fair trade, supporting industrial innovation, improving product quality, and strengthening consumer confidence. By ensuring that products, measurements, and services comply with internationally recognized standards, JSMO contributes significantly to Jordan’s economic development, export competitiveness, sustainable industry, and overall quality of life, making it one of the Kingdom’s most important regulatory institutions.
