The Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) is Jordan’s independent monetary authority, established in 1964 to maintain monetary and financial stability, preserve the value of the Jordanian Dinar, and support sustainable economic growth. Headquartered in Amman, the Bank formulates and implements monetary policy, manages the Kingdom’s foreign exchange reserves, issues and regulates the national currency, supervises and regulates banks and financial institutions, oversees payment and settlement systems, and promotes financial inclusion, financial technology (FinTech), and digital payment innovation. The Central Bank also works closely with local and international institutions to strengthen Jordan’s banking sector and ensure the resilience of the national economy.

The Bank is governed by a Board of Directors headed by the Governor, who also serves as Chairman of the Board, supported by two Deputy Governors and several board members appointed in accordance with the Central Bank Law. This governance structure ensures the effective implementation of monetary policy, banking supervision, financial stability, and strategic oversight of the Kingdom’s financial system.

Governor: H.E. Dr. Adel Al-Sharkas has served as Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan since 10 January 2022 by Royal Decree. Before his appointment, he served as Deputy Governor and held numerous senior positions within the Bank, particularly in economic research and monetary affairs. Dr. Al-Sharkas holds a Ph.D. in Financial Economics from the University of New Orleans (USA), along with master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Yarmouk University. Throughout his career, he has represented Jordan in regional and international financial forums and has taught economics and finance at several Jordanian and international universities. Under his leadership, the Central Bank has continued to strengthen banking regulation, financial stability, digital payment infrastructure, and financial inclusion initiatives.

Deputy Governors:

  • H.E. Mr. Ziad Asa’ad Ghanma – Deputy Governor, responsible for banking supervision and regulatory affairs.
  • H.E. Dr. Khaldoun Abdullah Al-Wshah – Deputy Governor, specializing in monetary operations, public debt, and investment management.
