Maqam Zayd ibn Harithah

Maqam Zayd ibn Harithah

Address:
Mu'tah, Al Mazar Al Janubi, Al Karak
Description:

Zayd ibn Harithah was one of the closest companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the first appointed commander of the Muslim army at the Battle of Mu’tah in 629 AD (8 AH).

The battle took place in the region of present-day Karak and became one of the most significant early encounters between Muslim forces and the Byzantine-Ghassanid armies. Zayd ibn Harithah led the Muslim army and was martyred during the battle. Command then passed to Ja’far ibn Abi Talib and subsequently Abdullah ibn Rawahah, both of whom were also martyred.

Today, the maqam associated with Zayd ibn Harithah forms part of the important Islamic heritage landscape of Al-Mazar Al-Janubi and Mu’tah. Together with the nearby shrines associated with Ja’far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Rawahah, it attracts visitors interested in Islamic history, religious heritage and the story of the Battle of Mu’tah.

For Ordonna, I would use the title “Maqam Zayd ibn Harithah” rather than “Zaid Bin Haretha,” because it is clearer for international visitors and more consistent with the other maqam listings we’re building.
