The Ministry of Culture is the government institution responsible for preserving, promoting, and developing Jordan’s cultural heritage, arts, literature, and creative industries. Established in 1966, the Ministry formulates and implements national cultural policies while supporting writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, cultural organizations, publishers, and creative entrepreneurs across the Kingdom. Headquartered in Amman, with directorates in all governorates, the Ministry works to strengthen Jordan’s cultural identity, preserve its rich heritage, encourage artistic expression, and foster cultural dialogue both nationally and internationally.
The Ministry oversees a broad range of responsibilities, including the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, support for literature, theatre, music, visual arts, cinema, libraries, museums, cultural festivals, and publishing. It also manages national cultural programs such as the Jordanian Cities of Culture Project, the Jordanian Family Library Project, the National Reading Program, and initiatives that promote creativity among youth and emerging artists. Through partnerships with local and international cultural institutions, the Ministry encourages cultural exchange, protects Jordan’s intellectual and artistic legacy, and expands access to cultural activities throughout the Kingdom. The Ministry has also expanded its electronic services and digital platforms to improve access to cultural information, grants, publications, and public services.
The Ministry is headed by H.E. Mustafa Al Rawashdeh, who serves as the Minister of Culture. The Minister oversees the Ministry’s strategic direction, cultural development policies, heritage preservation, artistic programs, and international cultural cooperation. Working closely with government institutions, universities, cultural organizations, UNESCO, and regional and international partners, the Ministry continues to promote Jordan as a center of cultural diversity, creativity, and intellectual exchange.
Today, the Ministry of Culture plays a vital role in enriching Jordan’s cultural life by preserving the Kingdom’s heritage, supporting artists and creative industries, promoting reading and lifelong learning, and encouraging innovation in the arts. Through sustainable cultural policies, community engagement, and international cooperation, the Ministry contributes significantly to national identity, social cohesion, tourism, creative economic growth, and the continued development of Jordan’s cultural landscape.
